Tyler Segal is an incoming freshman that will be attending the University of Florida this Fall. Majoring in Finance, Segal choose to play club golf at UF over other varsity college golf options.
Q: When did you start playing golf?
I started playing at 14. I played every year of high school (at West Boca Raton Community High School), and was MVP every year.
Q: What schools were recruiting you to play on their varsity college golf team?
Barry, Florida Atlantic, Dartmouth, Emory, and Lafayette.
Q: How did you hear about the Florida club golf team?
My Mom looked it up; I didn’t even know there was one. My mom called them, and I e-mailed back and forth. Brandon Harrold, who is the Club President, I played high school golf with him in Boca Raton. He didn’t go to my school, but I played against him.
Does your school have a club team?
Q: How did you eventually make the decision to attend Florida and go the club golf route?
In the middle of March I made the decision, I just felt UF was too hard of a school to get into, and the academics were too good. I could play club golf, and hopefully try and get on to the varsity team in a couple years.
Q: What would be your words of advice for other golfers maybe in a similar situation?
I would just say, go to the school you want to go to the most. You can still play club golf at the school you actually want to go to. I have always wanted to go to Florida. I felt like I could play (varsity) golf here, but it just didn’t happen.
Q: What is your major going to be?
I am majoring in Finance. My Dad is a dentist, and I am also taking medical classes, so I am doing finance and dentistry. I might go to dentist school. I am also trying to play golf every day, so it will be a busy time for me.
