Purdue First to Clinch Spot at Myrtle

Morningstar Golfer’s Club, Waukesha, WI--The inaugural NCCGA Great Lakes season came to an end this past weekend with Notre Dame claiming the rain-shortened weekend, but Purdue earning a trip to nationals.  After completing roughly three holes on Saturday afternoon, thunderstorms and standing water throughout the course led to a cancellation of round one, meaning the tournament would consist of only 18 holes on Sunday.

The conditions on Sunday morning were almost ideal with temperatures in the low 60’s and very little wind.  The soft conditions led to a plethora of birdie opportunities, especially for Notre Dame’s Dan Wiegandt, who carded 7 birdies en route to a 3-under par 69, giving him medalist honors. Wiegandt, who qualified individually for the Spring 2013 National Championship, played the par 4s in a mesmerizing 6 under par to pace the Irish. Notre Dame also got strong rounds from G.W. Bourdon (75) and Chris Dillon (77) to take first place as a team with total score of 378.

The defending regional champs, Purdue, were paced by Aaron Amick’s 1-under par 71 and finished with a 382 to take second place as a team, and ensure a trip to nationals. Wisconsin got a pair of 73’s from sophomores Corey Sweeney and Wei Tan Chean to take third place with a 385. Wisconsin B (402) and Michigan Tech (422) rounded out the top 5 teams.

Joining Wiegandt and Amick on the All-Tournament Team were Corey Sweeney and Wei Tan Chean (UW) 73 (+1), G.W. Bourdon (ND) 75 (+3),  and Luke Rhyner (UW-B), Collin Kuoppala (MTU) and Chris Dillon (ND) 77 (+5).
