Pitt Dominates First Atlantic Tournament

It was quite a weekend for the NCCGA Atlantic’s first regional tournament at Birdsfoot Golf Course in Freeport, PA.

There were six teams competing: Pitt, Duquesne, Robert Morris, Youngstown State, Penn State, and West Virginia.  Pitt the two time national participants were the odds on favorite to win and make it back to nationals for two straight seasons.

Pitt did not disappoint on the first day during awful cold and windy conditions they grabbed an 18 shot lead over WVU.  Only two people were able to break 80 during round one led by Mark Bondi from Pitt who shot a 76. Day two began with a frost delay that lasted about 2 and a half hours. Once the frost went away the weather was nice in the mid 50’s with light winds and the scoring proved that with nicer weather lower scores were easy to come by.

Pitt shot a very impressive 385 to wind up with a two-day total of 788. There were 8 players able to break 80 on Sunday once again led by Mark Bondi who shot a 73. Pitt had 5 of the 8 rounds in the 70’s on Sunday. Pitt dominated this week but it is a quick turnaround for them and the other members of the region who will play again this weekend at Butler’s Lakeside course in Elizabeth, PA.
