The Beanpot of College Golf

Boston is a city not known for it's college sports, but the Beanpot is one of the longstanding collegiate hockey traditions pitting local rivals Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern and Harvard against one another. With the formation of the Harvard Club Golf team in this fall, the time has finally come to see who will take home the Beanpot of college golf.

I had the chance to chat with the club presidents of some of the competitors this weekend who offered up some insight on their own teams and predictions.

What are BC's chances to win the New England Region and Beanpot?
Connor McCormack, aka "The Most Interesting Golfer in the NCCGA"

Conor McCormack, aka "The Most Interesting Golfer in the NCCGA"

Conor McCormack: I have never felt better about our golf team going into a season. We played Putterham last week and our top guys all shot between 68-74. If I'm being totally honest I'd say our top 6 can beat any team in the country. With Providence College playing in the newly formed Southern New England Region, I fully expect us to make it to Dancing Rabbit for the National Championship.

What type of other non-NCCGA events does BU play in?
Will Livingston: We currently only play in NCCGA events but we do have intersquad competitions at courses in the region. For instance, we have a team Ryder Cup event in October at Braintree Country Club.

What are the top 5 courses you guys play with the Nextgen Collegiate Membership?
Jimmy Silva: We use Putterham golf course in Brookline as our home/practice course. The Nextgengolf Collegiate Membership has made it very affordable and practical for us to play at least once per week. Tom, the pro at Putterham, welcomes the Nextgengolf program with open arms and has been great to us over the past two years. Our other top played Nextgen college rated courses are Newton Commonwealth, Shining Rock GC, Stow Acres CC, and Merrimack Valley GC.
Harvard is new to the NCCGA and club golf in general, is this your first tourney?
Tom Carroll: This will be our first tournament in the NCCGA and we are looking forward to competing in many NCCGA tournaments in the future. It's been a fun yet lengthy process getting the team started and we hope to make a big splash by claiming the coveted BeanPot title!
Over 60 college golfers will compete this coming Sunday afternoon, Sept 28th with the top 8 scores counting for each school.
